SIPs, MFs or cryptocurrency: CEOs, top bosses reveal their saving and investment plans

Top execs reveal their traditional method of saving, as well as the new age idea that they invest in.

NITHIN KAMATH, CEO, Zerodha

"For traditional investments, in an ELSS is a must; it reduces the risk from market volatility. As for a new age concept, I am a big fan of smallcase, a platform that allows thematic investing. So, if I believe the monsoon this year will be good, I can invest in the Monsoon Smallcase, a portfolio of stocks that benefit from good monsoons (tractors, fertiliser etc). Once purchased, I just have to track its index value to see the performance and not that of the individual stocks."

ASHISH GOEL, Cofounder, UrbanLadder

Mutual funds provide me with fluid investment options that are closer to traditional investments, but also reliable from a long-term perspective. On a futuristic investment, I would not opt for any cryptocurrency yet, but rather invest in technology companies like Google or Tesla. In the future, we'll witness a growing need for energy sustainable companies. That will possibly be the highest area of fi nancial returns."

DIVYANK TURAKHIA Founder, Media.net

"If investing isn't something that you do full time, I would recommend ETFs. Whether you use ETFs or mutual funds, deploy only as much that will allow you to stay invested across a long multi-year time frame. Crypto trading falls outside the risk profile of any of my current funds. I frequently make use of structured products, as they can be adapted to my needs and also effectively manage the complexity of derivatives."

ANANTH NARAYANAN CEO, Myntra

"About 30 per cent of my portfolio are safe investments for a rainy day, 60 per cent are to earn higher returns and the balance 10 per cent are investments with a much longer time horizon (for children). For the safe part, I typically invest in fixed deposits, insurance products, and real estate. For higher returns, I invest in mutual funds, and various private equity opportunities. The remaining 10 per cent, I either invest in specific individual stocks or in real estate with a 20-30 year investment horizon. I have invested in startups in India, and intend to do more of it this year. I typically invest in industries that I understand well."

KARAN BHAGAT CEO, IIFL Wealth

"My asset allocation has always been heavily skewed towards equity. I am a long term buy-hold investor, I do not try to time the market. My core equity portfolio is diversified mix of direct equity and mutual funds. As an angel investor, I have made some small investments in companies that could address existing gaps. I would prefer to wait and invest in future technologies after there are some initial success results. There are funds which invest in companies pre-IPO and we are a trendsetter here."
